Nel 2017 esce il suo romanzo d’esordio, The impossible fortress, pubblicato da Rizzoli nel 2018 con il titolo I favolosi anni di Billy Marvin, tradotto in 12 lingue e nominato per un Edgar Award.
Teddy è il secondo romanzo di Jason Rekulak, edito dalla Giunti editore nel Settembre di quest’anno; un paranormal thriller arricchito da illustrazioni di Will Staehle e Doogie Horner.

1. Teddy è il libro che sta spopolando tra i lettori di horror e thriller in Italia.
La scelta d’inserire i disegni nel narrato, che vanno ad intensificare la percezione visiva della storia si è rivelata particolarmente azzeccata. Da dove nasce questa idea?
Ho lavorato per circa 20 anni nell’editoria libraria e alcuni dei miei progetti preferiti erano libri illustrati di saggistica e libri illustrati per bambini, perché mi piaceva collaborare con artisti, fotografi e designer.
Questo lavoro mi ha fatto conoscere molti artisti visivi di talento e molti di loro sono diventati amici personali.
TEDDY è nato dopo aver lasciato il lavoro e ho deciso che volevo scrivere un libro che i miei amici Will Staehle e Doogie Horner avrebbero potuto illustrare.
Non conoscevo affatto la storia. Sapevo solo che volevo che le immagini fossero indizi di un mistero, che idealmente ce ne fossero 50 o 60 e che la forma dovesse cambiare o evolversi nel corso della storia, in modo da rimanere fresca e interessante.
Questi erano i miei parametri di base, e poi ho passato circa 3 mesi a fare brainstorming e a rifiutare molte storie diverse.
Si dà il caso che io guardi anche molti film horror, così a un certo punto mi è venuta l’idea di un bambino che disegnava immagini inquietanti, e quel singolo seme di ispirazione mi ha dato tutto ciò di cui avevo bisogno per iniziare a scrivere.
Una volta avuta l’idea, ho delineato la storia e l’ho scritta molto velocemente, in circa 9 mesi.
2. Il primo impatto con la copertina del libro è determinante per ogni lettore.
Oltre ad una illustrazione decisamente accattivante si legge subito l’apprezzamento di Stephen King e non si può rimanere indifferenti.
Da buon editor e artefice di vari Best seller qual è il mix perfetto per incuriosire i lettori al primo sguardo? Esiste la formula perfetta?
Le copertine di libri di successo sono un mistero.
Se esistesse una formula magica, tutti la userebbero.
La copertina americana di HIDDEN PICTURES è molto diversa da quella italiana di TEDDY, eppure entrambe le copertine hanno trovato un pubblico vasto e ricettivo.
Suppongo che l’unico denominatore comune sia la citazione di Stephen King – un fantastico sigillo di approvazione per qualsiasi storia di fantasmi.
Leggo Stephen King da quando avevo 12 o 13 anni, e ricevere la sua approvazione è stato il momento più importante di tutta questa esperienza.
3. Man mano che si prosegue nella lettura si ha sempre più la sensazione che le sfumature horror in Teddy vadano a sconfinare nella realtà di tutti i giorni, più che nel paranormale.
La paura dei giudizi, l’incapacità di affrontare la vita, la dipendenza da droghe o dal proprio egoismo sono tematiche ben più paurose della possibilità d’incontrare un fantasma.
“I mostri sono reali e anche i fantasmi sono reali. Vivono dentro di noi e, a volte, vincono.” dice King.
Sembra che tra le righe ci sia molto da intuire. Quale messaggio volevi veicolare scrivendo questa storia?
Non avevo intenzione di scrivere un romanzo con un messaggio o una lezione morale.
Volevo solo raccontare una storia ricca di suspense, inquietante e piena di sorprese!
4. Il mondo del paranormale affascina e terrorizza da sempre.
È tra i generi letterari che vediamo spesso nei primi posti delle classifiche dei libri più venduti. Come editor ti sei dato una spiegazione per questo fenomeno?
C’è un motivo per questa passione letteraria? Oppure dietro a questi titoli c’è solo un investimento commerciale particolarmente attivo?
La popolarità della narrativa paranormale/horror sembra aumentare e diminuire nel corso degli anni.
È stata molto popolare negli anni ’80 e un vero e proprio fallimento negli anni ’90.
Ora è tornata di nuovo in auge, ma non sono sicuro di poterne spiegare il motivo!
5. Nel tuo romanzo la freschezza e la limpidezza della prosa rende rapida e incalzante la storia.
Scegliere un linguaggio semplice, perfettamente coerente con il parlato di Mallory ha reso questo libro adatto ad ogni tipo di lettore. Dal più pigro a chi invece i libri li divora.
Attraverso quali maestri letterari passa questa tua leggerezza narrativa? Come si costruisce uno stile così efficace e vincente?
Grazie.
Passo molto tempo a modificare e riscrivere le mie frasi, e cerco di tagliare ogni parola superflua. Cerco di rendere i miei libri il più brevi possibile.
Inoltre, mi piace un linguaggio molto chiaro e diretto.
Ernest Hemingway e Raymond Carver mi hanno ispirato molto.
E mi piace il consiglio dello scrittore americano Mark Twain, che amava dire: “Non usare mai una parola da cinque dollari quando una da cinquanta centesimi va bene”.
6. Il tuo libro diventerà presto una serie per Netflix.
Ho la sensazione che a livello televisivo si punterà molto di più sull’elemento orrorifico e paranormale della storia, amplificandone ancora di più le sensazioni inquietanti.
Sarà così ? Oppure si discosterà leggermente dalla storia scritta?
È troppo presto per dirlo.
Ho scritto una sceneggiatura per un adattamento, ed è molto fedele al romanzo, ma so che ci saranno molti cambiamenti man mano che verranno coinvolte altre parti.
Il regista chiederà delle modifiche.
Gli attori chiederanno delle modifiche.
Lo studio potrebbe far intervenire un altro scrittore per apportare modifiche.
E tutto questo fa parte del normale processo.
Incrocio le dita e spero per il meglio!
7. Amici immaginari, fantasmi, case infestate, trance, l’evocazione dei morti…sono solo bellissimi espedienti narrativi oppure credi davvero che sotto il velo si nasconda un fondo di verità ? L’universo paranormale ti è familiare o è lontano dal tuo modo di vedere la vita?
Non ne sono sicuro.
Cerco di mantenere una mentalità aperta.
Ci sono così tante cose che non sappiamo del nostro corpo, del nostro pianeta e del nostro posto nell’universo.
C’è solo una cosa che so per certo: Tra cento anni, i miei pronipoti rideranno di quanto siamo ignoranti in questo momento.
8. Se dovessi scegliere tre parole che ti rappresentano, quali sarebbero?
Ho scritto per vent’anni prima di pubblicare il mio primo romanzo, quindi suppongo che le mie tre parole siano “non mollare mai”.
9. Se dovessi scegliere tre cose di cui non potresti mai fare a meno, escludendo ovviamente la scrittura, quali sarebbero?
La mia famiglia, le vacanze al mare e i buoni pasti!
10. Prima di salutarci quale messaggio o augurio vorresti lasciare ai nostri lettori?
Non avrei mai immaginato che il mio romanzo avrebbe trovato un pubblico al di fuori degli Stati Uniti, e sono entusiasta che i lettori italiani stiano scoprendo TEDDY e i suoi segreti.
Quindi, più di ogni altra cosa, voglio solo dire “Grazie!”.

1. Teddy is the book that is popular with horror and thriller readers in Italy. The decision to include drawings in the narrative, which intensify the visual perception of the story, turned out to be particularly apt. Where did this idea come from?
I worked for about 20 years in book publishing, and some of my favorite projects were illustrated nonfiction books and illustrated children’s books, because I enjoyed collaborating with artists, photographers, and designers.
The job exposed me to a lot of talented visual artists, and many of them became personal friends. TEDDY was born after I left the job, and I decided that I wanted to write a book that my friends Will Staehle and Doogie Horner could illustrate.
I didn’t know the story at all. I just knew I wanted the pictures to be clues to a mystery, and ideally there would be 50 or 60 of them, and the art would need to change or evolve over the course of the story, so that it would remain fresh and interesting.
Those were my basic parameters, and then I spent some 3 months brainstorming and rejecting lots of different stories.
As it happens, I also watch a lot of horror movies, so at some point I had the idea of a child drawing creepy pictures, and that single seed of inspiration gave me everything i needed to start writing. Once I had this idea, I outlined the story and wrote it very quickly, in about 9 months.
2. The first impact with the book cover is decisive for every reader. In addition to a strikingly eye-catching illustration, one immediately reads Stephen King’s appreciation and cannot remain indifferent. As a good editor and creator of several best sellers, what is the perfect mix to intrigue readers at first glance? Is there such a thing as the perfect formula?
Successful book covers are mysteries. If there was a magic formula, everyone would be using it. The U.S. cover of HIDDEN PICTURES is so very different from the Italian cover for TEDDY, and yet both covers have found large and receptive audiences.
I suppose the one common denominator is the quotation from Stephen King — a terrific seal of approval for any ghost story.
I have been reading Stephen King since I was 12 or 13 years old, and receiving his endorsement was the biggest highlight of this entire experience.
3. As one goes on reading, one increasingly gets the feeling that the horror undertones in Teddy border on the everyday, rather than the paranormal. Fear of judgement, inability to cope with life, addiction to drugs or one’s own selfishness are far scarier themes than the possibility of encountering a ghost.
“Monsters are real and ghosts are also real. They live inside us and sometimes they win,” says King.
There seems to be a lot of insight between the lines. What message did you want to convey by writing this story?
I did not set out to write a novel with any kind of message or moral lesson.
I just wanted to tell a story that was suspenseful and spooky and full of surprises!
4. The world of the paranormal has always fascinated and terrified. It is among the literary genres that we often see at the top of the bestseller lists. As an editor, have you given yourself an explanation for this phenomenon? Is there a reason for this literary passion? Or is there just a particularly active commercial investment behind these titles?
The popularity of paranormal/horror fiction seems to rise and fall over the years.
It was very popular in the 1980s and an absolute bust in the 1990s.
And now it’s back again, but I’m not sure I can explain why!
5. In your novel, the freshness and clarity of the prose makes the story fast-paced and pressing. Choosing a simple language, perfectly in line with Mallory’s speech made this book suitable for all kinds of readers. From the laziest to those who devour books. Through which literary masters does this narrative lightness of yours pass? How do you build such an effective and winning style?
Thank you. I spend a lot of time editing and rewriting my sentences, and I try to cut every last unnecessary word. I try to make my books as short as possible.
Also, I like language that is very clear and direct. Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Carver were big inspirations for me.
And I love the advice of American author Mark Twain, who liked to say “Never use a five-dollar word when a fifty-cent word will do.”
6. Your book will soon become a series for Netflix. I have a feeling that on TV there will be a much greater focus on the horror and paranormal element of the story, amplifying the disturbing feelings even more. Will this be the case? Or will it deviate slightly from the written story?
It’s too early to tell. I’ve written a screenplay for an adaptation, and it’s very faithful to the novel, but I know that many changes will occur as more parties get involved.
A director will request changes.
Actors will request changes.
The studio may bring in another writer to make changes.
And this is all part of the normal process. I am crossing my fingers and hoping for the best!
7. Imaginary friends, ghosts, haunted houses, trances, the evocation of the dead… are these just beautiful narrative devices or do you really believe that there is a depth of truth under the veil? Is the paranormal universe familiar to you or is it far from your way of seeing life?
I’m not sure. I try to stay open-minded.
There’s so much we don’t know about our bodies, our planet, and our place in the universe.
There is only one thing I know for certain: One hundred years in the future, my great-grandchildren will laugh about how ignorant we are right now.
8. If you had to choose three words that represent you, what would they be?
I wrote for twenty years before publishing my first novel, so I suppose my three words are “Never Give Up.”
9. If you had to choose three things that you could never do without, obviously excluding writing, what would they be?
My family, beach vacations, and good meals!
10. Before leaving us, what message or wish would you like to leave our readers?
I never imagined that my novel would find an audience outside of the United States, and I’m thrilled that Italian readers are discovering TEDDY and his secrets.
So more than anything I just want to say “Thank you!”
